Paths that don’t go where people want them to go is a reconstruction of strange occurrences in urban spaces. The work draws from case studies as well as personal exploration in the artist’s immediate surroundings. Abbey seeks to navigate the ego and the well intentioned yet harmful effects that urban planning has on the functionality of public space. The work can be falsely reduced to its aesthetic. The approachability of the paintings and sculptures, with their clean lines and a well informed, harmonious colour palette. When in reality it is a commentary on public and private space. Through sculptures such as ‘Stick a flower on it’ and a focus on distilled forms, Abbey is able to make their work accessible and engaging to all audiences, while critiquing the space around us.

Abbey Rich’s return to seeking inspiration in textiles has come at a time when nothing feels the same. it is almost like a comfort for them, something to hold on to. These works speak to their childhood and my early career. Heavily patterned, brightly coloured and somewhat textural, the works are nostalgic and playful. The gallery becomes an installation with layers of murals, framed works and hanging sculptures; a safe, strange world to sink into.

Latest Mural - Selina, Hotel foyer, St Kilda (Boon Wurrung Land)

A flowing artwork that carries you from the ground to the landing and up to the first floor. Reflecting the colour palette of the entire building, the artwork is abstract and fun. The large flowing scale gives you space to breathe between shapes whilst feeling the space with art and feeling. The work is abstract and bold, reflecting the local St Kilda area in all it’s busy, bustling beauty.
