For years I have spent most of my days painting as a mural artist. I am on view to the public during the installation of my work. I experience murder threats, sexual harassment and intimidation all whilst just trying to do my job. I want to create sculptural works that are made away from a site and placed in the environment. Bodies like mine and others taking up space without having to face the constant harassment that comes with my actual body being in the space. This is the basis for which I draw my inspiration.
These ideas have been brewing for a while and I’m just really starting to explore these ideas through the Lab Program. Extending from the 2-d nature of my murals and painted works. It almost feels like a set design, creating an immersive experience. These works are intended to be the groundwork of a greater sculptural practice. Becoming familiar with a medium that is very new to me in hopes to eventually pitch for larger public art projects. I am excited to continue exploring installation type works incorporating both form, colour and three dimensionalities. Using the space at Platform Arts to experiment with immersive concepts whilst in the company of other artists, perhaps with more experience in this field is very exciting an opportunity.
